Žiri is located at the intersection of the Upper Carniola, the Littoral and the Inner Carniola Regions. The Žiri Basin is surrounded by the Škofja Loka, Polhov Gradec and Idrija-Cerkno Hills and with it ends the picturesque Poljane Valley, which stretches along the Poljane Sora River to the medieval Škofja Loka. Žiri is known for shoemaking and bobbin lace, while the surrounding area is characterized by the remnants of the Rupnik Line fortifications, the system for fortifying the former Rapallo Border.
