With its narrow gravitational hinterland, Polzela has an extremely important geographical position. It lies on an important old crossroads connecting the routes from the western parts of the Celje Basin with the Šaleška and the Upper Savinja Valleys. These areas were already settled in the early days, as Marcus Aurelius built a strong camp of the Legion II Italica in Ločica ob Savinji. For many centuries, its history was being written by the Knights of Malta, the Counts of Celje and the Dominicans.
